Seniors and adults with
disabilities in Western
and Southern Wayne County have a variety of transportation
resources. In most cities and townships, service for seniors is
available within the community. Some programs allow for travel
into contiguous communities. The SMART Community Transit is
available in many communities. However, service restrictions may
prevent cross-county travel or travel to some neighboring
communities. Many communities operate their own senior citizen
transportation programs.

The Senior Alliance – Area
Agency on Aging 1-C is pleased to announce a
Transportation Program in partnership with the Downriver
Community Conference.
This program is intended to be the 'provider of last
resort' and will give door-to-door, non-emergency
medical transportation services in western and
southern Wayne County and the surrounding areas.
Eligibility is prioritized based on need for seniors (age
60 and older) residing in the 34 communities of The Senior
Alliance service area.
There is no charge to seniors for this service,
though donations are accepted. This is a limited time
pilot program with services offered until September, 2008,
contingent upon funding availability. Advance
notification and appointments are required. For
additional information or to schedule an appointment, call
the Downriver Community Conference at (734) 362-7029.

Other programs are similar to the
SMART Community Transit service, including Nankin Transit
Commission which serves Wayne, Westland, Garden City and
Inkster.
All Community Transit buses are lift-equipped. The service is
"curb to curb," which means that the driver can assist riders on
or off the bus. Drivers cannot escort seniors to their doors.
There is a two-day advance reservation requirement.
