Assisted living is a term that describes various forms of multi-unit housing accommodations with types of personal and congregate services. There is not a national standard definition for assisted living housing. The Assisted Living Federation of America defines an assisted living residence as "a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health care designed to meet the needs - both scheduled and unscheduled - of those who need help with activities of daily living."

The Michigan Association of Homes and Services for the Aging uses "assisted living" as an umbrella term to include three housing options - Home for the Aged, Adult Foster Care, and non-licensed apartment communities which offer optional services. Non-licensed assisted living apartments are included in the "Retirement Housing" section of this directory.

The Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Citizen for Better Care, provides assistance to residents and families of LTC facilities by helping to resolve complaints; provide information about rights and rules; and referrals to community resources. The Department of Community Health - Bureau of Health Systems license and monitor Homes for the Aged, Adult Foster Care, and nursing home facilities. *See listings in the Community Services and Resources section under Long-Term Care Ombudsman.

Adult Foster Care (AFC) homes offer 24-hour personal care, protection, and supervision for individuals who cannot live alone but who do not require continuous nursing care. This type of housing, along with the Home for the Aged housing, is often called "licensed Assisted Living." This list of AFC homes are "senior oriented." For information about AFC homes for individuals with mental illness, physical or developmental disabilities, contact your local Department of Human Services office. Many services are included in monthly charge. AFC homes can be licensed for 1 - 20 residents. All are private pay unless otherwise noted.
